Artist Types respond to media type.

Name initiated this collaboration by type of project. Name then added media, indended to complement the media.

At various points throughout the semester, the partners, who did not meet in person until the last day of the program, wrote letters back and forth, offering insight into the ideas and process behind their work.

The structure for this program evolved from a conversation about the painter Vasily Kandinsky (1866-1944) and his friendship with composer Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951). Kandinsky, whose work is well-represented in the Guggenheim's collection , believed that painting and music were strongly related and that he and Schoenberg were addressing synonymous ideas, although through different media. With Kandinsky’s ideas and experiences in mind, we asked participants in these workshops to draw artistic inspiration from a variety of sources, be it in their own medium or another.

These workshops were supported in part by a generous grant from ZER01. Participants' final projects will be presented at the Adobe Global Youth Voices Exhibition, a part of 01SJ: A Global Festival of Art on the Edge, June 4-8, 2008 in San Jose, California.

Digital Photography :: Digital Music

In the spring of 2008, the Guggenheim Museum offered two programs for high school artists: a digital photography workshop, and an electronic music workshop. During the first half of the semester, each photographer produced a series of original pictures, while the musicians constructed experimental music pieces from found sounds.

At the halfway point in the program, each student swapped work with someone from the other class. The students then began a second project, inspired by the work of their partners. The resulting audio slideshows are presented on this site. read more..
